Ugly by Constance Briscoe – 2006

Synopsis: This heartbreaking story, retells the depressing childhood of Constance Briscoe, who was terribly abused mentally and physically by her mother. Food was kept away from Constance, she was beaten and burnt and whatever chance she had her mother would call her “ugly” amongst other things. Constance began associating her ugliness with her dark skin, and often compared herself to the other women in her family who were of lighter complexion and therefore thought to be beautiful. Constance’s struggle with the will to live often left her wondering  if heaven is the “better place” perhaps she ought to go sooner rather than later. How did Constance Briscoe manage to escape the hands of her abusive mother and turn her life around for a better future?
